The Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative (MFI) will host its Fifth Annual Fatherhood Summit, “Empowered Fathers: Bridging the Gap," on Friday, October 8, and Saturday, October 9, at Greater New Birth Church (8201 W. Silver Spring Drive). This year’s featured speaker is five-time NBA All-Star and former Guard for the Milwaukee Bucks, Sidney Moncrief.
Adopting the widespread appeal of basketball, the entire 2010 summit will have a basketball flavor. Everything from the opening “tip-off” (jump ball) to the “final buzzer” (closing ceremony), ALL aspects of the event will be described using basketball terminology that men/fathers understand. Each workshop or session will be titled with sports lingo to engage men in critical discussions that are applicable on the court of life.

THROUGH THE LENSES OF PRISON RE-ENTRY
(Open to Men and Women, Thursday only)
Thursday, October 7, 2010, is the kick-off of a very special partnership between the Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative (MFI) and the Christian Association for Prison Aftercare (CAPA). For one day only, the MFI/CAPA will join forces to address the issue of prison re-entry for men and women.
General Session - 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
This session will feature two video presentations highlighting the obstacles - and triumphs - experienced by individuals returning home from incarceration. This session will be interactive providing an opportunity for audience participation.
3:15 - 4:15p.m. - Workshop Sessions
- Through the Children's Lenses: This session, facilitated by mentors who work with children of incarcerated parents, will address the struggles faced by those involved and how those struggles are transferred into relationships after the parent(s) return home.
- Through the Lenses of the Returning Citizen: This session will focus on the process of becoming a successful returning citizen through the removal of destructive thinking and working to develop positive relationships with parole agents, employers, the community and family.
- Through Personal Lenses: The Hidden Shackles - This session will deal with the challenges associated with mentally disconnecting from the prison culture (cells, handcuffs, guards, ""inmate hierarchy"" and the otherwise ""structured"" atmosphere of incarceration) and gradually deleting that ""mental environment"" from the thought process.
- Through Society's Lenses: This session turns-the-tables and examines the returning citizen through society's lenses; the employer's lenses, law enforcement's lens, government's lens and the overall community's lens, to create a broader, well-rounded discussion from both sides of the issue."
